Freshly cut grass beneath your feet, oak trees whistling in the breeze, sprawling vineyards as far as the eye can see; this is so much more than your average midsummer night’s dream, it’s a picnic in the Winelands.

We all love a good Saturday afternoon glass of Chenin and if you live in the winelands that glass is more often than not accompanied by four or five other glasses at a beautiful tasting venue. Wine tasting is a beloved pastime of many locals and will often be high up on the list of recommendations of things to do on your first trip to Cape Town.
We happen to have found a way to add on to that experience, now you can have your tasting and then take a short walk down to the picnic areas and enjoy your favourite wines with some freshly prepared dishes.
And we have done the research for you! We have compiled a list of some of the best picnics in the Winelands, including our own at Hawksmoor House.
The beginning of spring has drawn our attention to the forgotten hues of our gardens and has inspired us to lay down our blankets and have a glass of wine underneath the welcoming oak trees.
Our Chef has prepared a lovely range of dishes to suite the summer palate; including: a charcuterie platter, a meze platter, a caprese salad, a vegetable wrap, roast beef sandwich and a chocolate brownie for dessert.

A picnic for two will cost you R550 and we will throw in a bottle of Hawksmoor House Wine! Join us every Sunday from 11h00 to 16h00.
On the other side of the mountains, Vergelegen lays await with an out of the ordinary take on picnics…
Nestled between the mystical Camphor trees, a wooden table with a white table cloth boasts a delicious feast for you to enjoy along with the wine of your choice.
The menu offers a selection of breads and pates, cured meats, cheeses, salads and a yoghurt lemon tart for the sweet tooth. The spread is priced at R310 per person and is available daily from 12h15 to 16h30.

If it’s a pond side view that tickles your fancy then none other can be recommended than Spier Wine Estate. Picnics in the winelands may have originated from this historic estate and it will always hold many fond memories for us. Just be sure to keep the geese at bay, otherwise half of your delectable spread might be stolen away!
With a large variety of wines to try, there is sure to be more than one to pair with the homemade style picnic lunch, filled with olives, nuts, breads, meats and salads. Join them from 11h00 to 16h30 daily at R275 per person.
