Mourvèdre – Hawksmoor Red – 2014

Wine Name & Vintage:

Mourvèdre- Hawksmoor Red – 2014

We make a single variety wine from each of our red grape culitvars and choose a “classic” to be named simply by its grape, under the Hawksmoor label. (Pronounced “Moor-verd-ra)

Grape(s) / Blend:

Mourvèdre- 100%.  Our “terroir” suits this variety well. We make it as a single varietal, and also use it in our two signature “Rhone” style blends: Saint Alfege’s and Algernon Stitch.

Oaking / Alcohol %:

13 % alcohol by volume. Gently barrel matured in older French  oak barrels for 24 months. Limited release – only 4 barrels made.

Platters Rating:

Platters Comments:

“Varietal-typical herbaceous notes & dark-toned fruit…in a surprisingly swelte package. All older oak, ends smooth & long.”

Number of bottles made:

1,500 bottles

Further Notes:

A rare opportunity to try this lovely spicy varietal bottled as a single cultivar. Should you visit the farm, this is the block of vines to the right of the entrance gate to the werf.  This is our first plantings under our ownership. Mourvèdre is the French name for this varietal, and it is normally used as a blending wine in a typical Rhone blend.  We love it on its own too ! In South Africa it is often referred to by its Spanish name, i.e. Mataro. For those learning more about this cultivar, it is interesting to taste this alongside our 2015 Mourvèdre where we chose not to use oaking.
